About

Nice to meet you

Cassy - Founder, Zero Wasted

Hi, I'm Cassy

Zero Wasted started when I was researching better alternatives to everyday essentials and became a bit overwhelmed trying to find and compare all the different options and sift through the greenwashing.

So I thought in doing all this research it may help other people make more informed decisions when trying to buy more consciously.

I believe in buying less and buying better, so I will spend more if it will save me money (and is more sustainable) in the long run. But, I also love a bargain, so in all of my Shopping Guides, I work out what the cost is per unit, g, ml, etc. So it's easier for you to compare value for money.

You needn't try to be perfect either, the planet doesn't care if your jars all match on Instagram. My aim is to create a shame-free place where you can be inspired to do what you can, with what you have, from where you are.

Frequently Asked Thoughts

If you're like me, sometimes you feel motivated and hopeful for change, and other times disheartened, but that's okay, it's good to be honest with where we're at.
  • What's the point?

Climate change. Plastic pollution. Excessive waste. I get it, it's overwhelming, trying to do your bit for the planet sometimes feels like you're turning up to an earthquake with a dustpan and brush, and there are understandably moments of thinking 'what's the point'?

But, don't be disheartened - the desire for action is bursting forth and it's all too easy to convince ourselves that it’s too hard to make the tough choices or that our actions will make no difference. We mustn’t forget that many individuals make a group, and many groups create a social movement.

  • Ok, but what difference does it really make in the scheme of things?

I don't believe in putting all the responsibility on the individual, however, voting with your wallet is more powerful than you think. It sways consumer demand, and businesses are realising they need to focus more on people and planet if they want to keep their profits. This is what is known as the Triple Bottom Line.

It also feels great to support smaller and more ethical businesses, and not be throwing as much away into landfill. Like anything, it's about progression, not perfection.

  • Isn't it more expensive to make better choices?

I was actually surprised to find that plenty of sustainable choices were cheaper in the long run. For instance, moving to these Multi-purpose Cleaning Sheets works out at 35p a bottle of cleaner, or switching from disposable razors to the Leaf Razor means it now costs approx 4p per shave instead of £1.11.

You'll always be able to easily compare our Best Buys with your current choices so you can make an informed decision if you decide to make some switches.

  • Plastic is evil, so shall I get rid of what I have and change it all to eco stuff?

No way! Always make use of what you have, there's absolutely no need to start throwing away Tupperware or plastic items you already own in order to swap them for more eco options. This will only add more to the waste stream, and Tupperware is excellent at its job, plastic isn't evil - we just need to treat it more like a precious resource.

Also, only ever buy what you really need. For instance, if you don't already own or intend to use straws, you probably don't need to go and buy reusable bamboo ones.

  • I want to buy less and buy better. What next?

This is why we've hand picked and curated only the very best in plastic-free, zero waste products, tips and inspiration to make it as easy as possible to transition into a lighter footed, simpler and cheaper way of life. Get started by checking out our Shopping Guides or Zero Waste Best Buys.
