Soft on you, soft on the planet: I tried out the award-winning eucalyptus silk bed sheets from Ethical Bedding. Read the review to see how they delivered a more luxurious and sustainable sleep and why I won't ever go back to cotton bedding.

The one activity you spend most of your life doing is sleep, about one third of our lives. So it makes sense to create a luxurious oasis for those precious hours, and Ethical Bedding's heavenly eucalyptus silk bed sheet set is about to revolutionise your sleep - and your standards for sustainable luxury. Their ultra-soft sheets are on a planet-friendly mission that will ensure you wake up on the right side of the bed every morning.

I have been eagerly looking to enhance my bedding and have been intrigued by the idea of trying eucalyptus silk (lyocell/TENCEL™) bedding due to its sustainability and numerous benefits. Ethical Bedding is at the forefront for this type of bedding, making them the perfect choice.

About Ethical Bedding

Ethical Bedding offers a luxury line of bedding that's gentle on your skin and gentle on the earth. Made from renewable eucalyptus pulp harvested from sustainable forests, their sheets, duvets, pillows and mattresses are naturally hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, temperature regulating, and outrageously soft.

As founder James Higgins explains, his mission goes far beyond bedding. After leaving the financial tech industry, he founded Ethical Bedding to align his work with his innate love of nature. The company's vision is to "create a better world over a lifetime" by making the most sustainable luxury bedding on the market.

SUSTAINABILITY & ETHICS

This pioneering company has made environmental sustainability the beating heart of its business, from farm to fabric. Ethical Bedding also plants one tree for each order to offset its carbon footprint, with a goal of 100,000 trees by 2025.

All their products are proudly Vegan Society approved and cruelty-free and ethically manufactured in either the UK, India or China. They insist on total transparency within their supply chain and understand the environmental impact of every process and decision. Everyone is paid more than a fair living wage and works in excellent conditions by insisting upon the highest accreditations with all their supply and production partners and carry out regular checks.

Eucalyptus Silk Bed Sheets: Unrolling the Details

The star of the Ethical Bedding collection is their beloved Eucalyptus Silk Bed Sheet Set. This bestseller bundles a duvet cover, fitted sheet, and two pillowcases woven from OEKO-TEX certified eucalyptus fibre. The duvet cover is fastened with corozo nut buttons from the tagua tree which adds an earthy accent. Their sheets are designed in London and available in all standard UK sizes and 3 colours, white, grey and wheat. I went for the grey, and I mean, look 😍...It was love at first night.

Their packaging is completely plastic free and each part of the bed sheet set came in its own embroidered fabric bag which I will reuse for keeping accessories dust free or for travelling to pack my shoes or use for separating washing (basically endless uses). For the bedding I've broken things down into 4 main points below.

1. (RIDICULOUSLY) SILKY SOFTNESS

Eucalyptus bedding is known for being luxuriously soft and indulgent, and these sheets are are silky as they look. Ethical Bedding use a 300 thread count single-ply satin weave. A quick note on this, while a higher thread count seems to indicate higher quality sheets, beware of thread counts above 500, as they might use multi-ply threads, which can inflate the count without necessarily improving quality.

The perfectly round eucalyptus fibres create a smoother, more luxurious feel than cotton's rougher surface. As soon as I unpacked these sheets they certainly lived up to the hype. They are absurdly soft with a super sleek texture that really is comparable to silk. And even better, they are designed to get even softer with every wash!

Lying between these dreamy eucalyptus sheets for the first night felt like the indulgent sleep experience you would expect from checking into a 5 star hotel. Blissful and elegant, I cocooned myself in their cooling, buttery softness for a solid 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep. These are the kind of sheets Elizabeth James in the Parent Trap would buy: timeless, classic, luxury.

2. BREATHABLE & TEMPERATURE REGULATING

A huge benefit of Eucalyptus sheets is their magical ability to regulate your sleep temperature all year round, so you'll sleep better in any weather. The breathable, moisture-wicking fabric keeps you blissfully cool on hot summer nights. In chillier weather, the fabric becomes cosy and insulating, retaining just enough warmth to keep you comfortably nestled. The eucalyptus regulates itself, maintaining that sweet spot of not too hot, not too cold. This temperature balance results in deeper, more restorative sleep. I think my first 9 hour night was testament to this. 😅

3. HYPOALLERGENIC & GENTLE ON SKIN

No toxic chemicals are used in the process or synthetic fibres, and will repel bugs and dust mites, making it a great choice for people with allergies or sensitivities. Less moisture on bedding also means less susceptibility to a build-up of mould and mildew. It's also great for people with acne-prone skin as it also has antibacterial properties that help to prevent breakouts, which is most definitely a reassuring plus for me! The anti-static and silk texture also prevent hair damage. Blimey, who knew bedding was a secret weapon in your beauty routine that can care for your skin and hair whilst you sleep?

4. NATURALLY ANTIBACTERIAL

Nothing beats drifting off into dreamland with a fresh set of sheets. So I'll take anything that can extend that wonderful feeling for longer. Eucalyptus silk is inherently more hygienic due to its natural antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, reducing the presence of harmful microbes, pathogens and germs. This means you can enjoy a cleaner sleep environment, especially if you have your furry friend snuggled up beside you.

What is Eucalyptus Silk, exactly? Is it sustainable?

Lyocell or TENCEL™ is the technical name for Eucalyptus Silk fabric. It stands out for its eco-friendly production and is widely considered one of the most sustainable fabrics in the world.

The renewable material is crafted from eucalyptus trees, the wood is turned into a pulp using an award-winning closed-loop process. This pulp is then turned into yarn. What's remarkable is that nearly 100% of the solvents are reused in production resulting in zero waste and a lower carbon footprint.

Eucalyptus trees are rapid growers that require ten times less water than cotton. They do not require pesticides or fertilisers and are harvested by cutting, not uprooting which allows them to regenerate from the existing root system. Ethical Bedding sources from trees grown on non-arable land; which means land that cannot be used for food.

Notably, this fabric doesn't rely on petroleum, unlike plastic-based polyester sheets, which also off-gasses microplastic while you sleep (if you sleep in polyester sheets).

Eucalyptus or Cotton: Which is better?

So how does eucalyptus compare to traditional cotton bedding? Eucalyptus offers next-level comfort and sustainability compared to cotton, making it an excellent choice for those seeking superior quality and eco-friendly bedding. Now, let's delve into the specifics in the comparison table below.

Benefits Eucalyptus Cotton
☁️ Softness Perfectly round fibres feel silkier and smoother, ideal for sensitive skin and prevents hair damage. Naturally wavy fibers have rougher texture.
😌 Breathability Highly breathable, prevents night sweats Less breathable, can feel hot and sweaty.
💧 Moisture Superior moisture management creates a dry, hostile environment for bacterial growth. Stays fresher longer. Holds onto moisture, which promotes bacterial growth.
🌳 Sustainability Eucalyptus trees are grown in biodiverse forests on non-arable land. Land is that is unsuitable for farming. Currently, cotton crops use about 2.5% of the world's arable land. Land that could be better used for food.
☠️ Pesticides Uses no pesticides or insecticides. Eucalpytus trees are naturally repellent. Uses 16% of global insecticides including neonicotinoids that kill birds and bees.
🚰 Water Usage Eucalyptus sheets use about 150 litres of water in production, 95% less than cotton. Average cotton bed sheet uses about 4,000 litres of water.
⚡️ Energy 19kwH, or 30% less energy to make a set of super soft Eucalyptus sheets. 27kwH of energy to make a set of cotton sheets.
🦠 Antibacterial Inhibit the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, funghi and dust mites, keeping your bedding fresher for longer. Does not have antibacterial properties like eucalyptus silk. It relies more on factors such as breathability and moisture-wicking.

Caring for your Eucalyptus Sheets

Eucalyptus silk is incredibly durable both when wet and dry, it is resistant to shrinkage and withstands multiple washes without weakening or losing its shape. However here's 5 top tips for looking after your new sheets:

  • Wash separately on Delicate cycle (cold water 30 degrees).
  • Dry on Gentle or Delicates with the lowest heat setting.
  • No fabric softener or laundry pods as they may cause issues with discolouration and stains.
  • No bleach recommended (oxygen-based bleach can be used in small amounts if need be).
  • Iron low heat, or simply hang dry and do not iron. Ethical Bedding do not recommend using an iron on their sheets but if you do, please use low heat and steaming works best to help remove any wrinkling.

Is it time to invest in high-quality bedding?

  1. Save money - quality sheets save money in the long run - they last 5 x longer than cheap sheets that fall apart quickly.
  2. Healthier sheets - they reduce dust mites and have antibacterial properties.
  3. Eco-friendly materials - eucalyptus silk is gentler on the environment than water-hogging, chemical-laden cotton.
  4. Breathable - keeps you in the ideal temperature zone all night for a deeper sleep.
  5. Ultra-soft luxury - high-end sheets look and feel better, treat yourself to the ultimate comfort for amazing zzz's!
